As the search engine marketing industry continues to grow and mature, information regarding the this profession becomes more readily available both online and offline. With the vast amount of SEO and SEM knowledge just a few key strokes away, one must be careful of what they read and believe, as much of the information online are outdated or simply fabricated. It is very easy for new SEOs to lose direction and fall into the black hat trap. Below is a few tips to avoid following the wrong advices and getting your site banned.
- Check the dates of the original article and/or post.While you are enjoying the great article about some specific SEO techniques that promise to shoot your site up the rankings, make sure you also check out the publishing date of the article.
Some SEO techniques that were no brainers a few years ago have become rather useless or even damaging to the whole SEO execution, and often enough, these old techniques are often featured in some ancient articles and posts that show up in the top half of the result page when you want to find the winning formula.
Some old “to-do’s” that have become obsolete or less effective include link trading, link buying, and meta keyword stuffing; these have either become useless or even harmful to the site.
- Follow the advices of the top names in the industryBookmark and/or subcribe to the top search engine marketing professionals’ site and read about their insights and advices about the industry.

Having said that, I don’t mean that you should blindly follow everything the top dogs in SEO suggest as these same well respected people can also make mistakes too, but it’s always good to learn from their experience.
- Think long term, not short cutsJust remember, the long term success of any SEO implementation takes plenty of dedication, patience and hardwork to become a reality.
There is no “I win” button in SEO, and just like everything else in life other than tax and death, there is no guarantee in SEO. Algorithms could change, search trends could change, and keywords could also change too. When you implement your SEO, just be patient and observe all the changes as time goes by, and you will definitely learn from your mistakes and experience.
